From the creator of the modern espresso machine process comes the Gaggia Accademia: a beautiful, modern machine with a sleek exterior and highly customizable features. Gaggia has been active for nearly a century, so you can trust their products, especially one of this caliber! See if the Gaggia Accademia, with its efficient processes and different uses, is right for you!
The Gaggia Accademia espresso machine is a formidable machine indeed. Its exterior is classic stainless steel and its display is one of the best in the business! Overall, its build is especially sturdily built to increase the machine’s life and decrease the impact on your wallet.
Digital LED Display and How it Works
The efficiency and clarity of the Gaggia Accademia espresso machine is one of its main selling points. It’s in color which makes the LED, digital display as easy to read as possible. You’ll be able to program your coffee strength, coffee temperature, the amount of coffee, the milk length, milk foam, and the prebrewing amount. On the front of the machine, there are buttons for different types of drinks you’re able to make. In the very center, on the bottom of the screen, there are two little icons. One is of a pair of gears and the other has a coffee cup. Using the buttons underneath each of the respective icons, you’ll be able to program your standard settings and keep them until you decide to tweak them, which means you won’t have to readjust them to your liking every time you use your Gaggia Accademia.
System Settings (gear icon)
Inside the system settings, there are many intricacies to really make sure your machine is your own and suitable for pretty much every preference you can think of for an espresso machine.
In the general settings, you have the options to toy with you your cup warmer, ecomode function, and the acoustic tone (beeping sound made when you touch buttons). In the display settings, you can adjust the language and even the brightness of the digital display!
There is also an option for calendar time settings, which is pretty self explanatory, but aside from times and dates it also gives you the ability to choose how long the machine takes to go into sleep mode and if and when the machine is supposed to turn on automatically. The timer is adjustable from days to hours to minutes.
Water settings control the water hardness and whether or not you enable the filter that the Gaggia Accademia comes with.
Last, and arguably the most important, are the maintenance settings. You’ll be able to view how much coffee you’ve made, determine when you should descale your machine next, activate your brew group cleaning cycle and your carafe wash cycle, and control whether or not the milk carafe auto cleans after each use.
Of course, there is also an option called factory settings, which simply resets the machine to its default settings should you be unsatisfied with your custom tweaks!
Coffee Settings (cup icon)
This feature allows you to see the different styles of coffee to pick from concerning the buttons on the front of the machine (cappuccino, long coffee, hot water etc.).
Double Boiler (Dual Boiler)
Having two boilers means that there’s no waiting between steaming and brewing. Your preparation time will decrease greatly because of this. Both of the boilers are made of stainless steel-lined aluminum
With your Gaggia Accademia espresso machine, there’s no need to worry about possibly burnt coffee beans, which is pretty common with metal grinders. The Accademia comes equipped with a ceramic grinder which does just as well as the metal grinders in preserving the aroma and flavor of the beans without accidentally burning them!
As with pretty much everything on the Gaggia Accademia, the grinder comes with a lot of room to adjust to your needs. In fact, there are eight grind settings. You can adjust how fine or coarse the grinds are by using a knob and you can control the actual amount that is made, which is from 7 to 10.5 grams.
If you have pre-ground beans you can use the bypass doser to skip the grinding process. This is useful if you don’t want to use the beans in the airtight bean hopper (12 oz) or if you just want to quickly make a cup of decaf but have caffeinated beans in the hopper.
The steam wand can either be super-automatic or manual, and it has the ability to texture milk or simply even heat up water.
The Gaggia Accademia espresso machine features a one touch milk managing system. Basically, the milk carafe is crafted to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. The milk never actually enters the machine itself, as the carafe is removable and its own handle functions as a spout. This prevents milk from spoiling and becoming hardened inside of the machine, which can cause problems especially in the longterm.
You’ll have three different options for how you want your milk to be. You’ll be able to steam it and have two choices for frothing.
As for cleaning, there is, of course, a detailed explanation on actual upkeep. However, for daily use the milk carafe is self-cleaning to a good extent. It automatically blows steam through its handle and all of the cleaned out milk falls into the drip tray. You can turn this function on and off in your settings!

Maintaining the Gaggia Accademia Espresso Machine
Since the Gaggia Accademia is stainless steel, it should be easy to wipe off for external spills and things of that nature. Additionally, it will remind you to descale so you don’t have to worry about constantly checking your machine. In fact, most of the Gaggia Accademia is designed to make maintenance as easy as possible.
As far as the brew group, which is basically what tamps for you, simply rinsing it with cold water should cover the first level of maintenance. It should be pretty easy because the brew group is removable! You do need to make sure that you’re not scrubbing it or using soap because you may remove the grease, which is necessary for the machine. For a deeper clean, there is a setting for the official brew group cleaning cycle in the maintenance settings. You will use Gaggia cleaning tablets to complete this process, and you’ll greatly increase its longevity by doing this less-than-five-minute cycle.
As for the milk carafe, you can manually disassemble it and clean the pieces separately. However, there is also a much easier option. If you go to your maintenance settings and select the carafe wash cycle, fill water tank, and pour 4 oz of Urnex Rinza detergent mixed with water to the fill line! There are only two parts of the cycle and this will get to the internal parts you can’t get to when cleaning by hand. It is also very, very easy to do and doesn’t take much time.
